Suddenly, twelve shell-shaped unidentified flying objects appear in the sky above Earth, hovering over twelve different countries. The extraterrestrials send signals to humanity, but humans struggle to interpret them. The U.S. military enlists the help of linguist Louise Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly, hoping that the two can collaborate to unravel the mystery of the aliens' language.
